Fragile Connections (2006-2007)

“Fragile Connections: Fragments of a Lover’s Discourse” (2006-7) is a parable of love relationships in digital times.
I capture the interference, or ‘noise’ in the fractured digital image in still shots captured from private webcam conversations as a means to reflect on the fragile nature of long-distance affectionate relationships. The title is inspired by Roland Barthes’ homonymous book “A Lover’s Discourse: Fragments” composed of a list of fragments of literature and philosophy as gestures of a lover’s discourse. Here, the images of a "telematic embrace" suffer interferences of distance, issues of translation and electronic disturbance from fragile Internet connections not fully able to transmit images or emotions accurately.
